Project overview

Field controller for monitoring and controlling agricultural equipment through multiple wired sensor/actuator connections.

Engineering approach

Field-deployed agricultural hardware typically runs on batteries for months at a time, so power budgeting and low-power sleep modes shape most of the design decisions. On this board, that translates into a component set built around 4L and MCU, with layout and stack-up decisions driven by outdoor durability, low-power operation for long field deployments, and reliable long-range connectivity.

From prototype to compact design

The first version was assembled from off-the-shelf modules wired together on a printed plate. The custom PCB brings the controller, sensor, fan and power connections onto one board, which allows a much more compact build. Click any photo to view it full size.

Earlier smart irrigation and field controller prototype built from an Arduino Nano-class board, a solar charging module, a relay module, a wired probe sensor, an 18650 cell and a blower fan on a 3D-printed plate
